When it was first exhibited at University of California at San Diego, this 'dismantled film' included a spoken sound track, 142 photographic prints and a written narrative about the American aerospace company, Lockheed. However, as reproduced for the page, the original sound track has been abridged and turned into text and many photographic sequences have been shortened. Other photo projects such as 'This Ain't China: A Photonovel' (1974) and 'School is a Factory' (1980) have suffered similar fates. Like 'Aerospace Folktales', these works were also originally staged as exhibitions and have been modified in the move from gallery wall to printed publication. Although an introductory note attempts to assure readers that all original integrity has been maintained, without seeing the exhibitions, it is impossible to know how these alterations may have affected meaning. Despite this minor criticism, what the photo works do reveal is Sekula's interest in photography's ability to function in ensemble and to be read as narrative.

A still from "Video Days" (1989) by Spike Jonze Credit: Courtesy Spike Jonze It's little wonder that the skate scene has borne its fair share of crossover artists. You need only consider the work of Academy Award-winning filmmaker Spike Jonze, who got his start photographing skateboarders and BMX riders as a teen in '80s Maryland. Similarly, Glen E. Friedman, after shooting the L. A. skate team Z-Boys in the '70s, turned to music, photographing radical musicians like Black Flag and Suicidal Tendencies, as well as early hip-hop greats like Public Enemy and Run-DMC. His photos can now be found in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Museum of American History and the Smithsonian Institution, among others. In 2020, skateboarding will achieve a new milestone when it debuts at the Tokyo Olympics.

The champions of photography shift from expressive affect to seemingly objective observation, often opting for a melange of these incompatible perspectives. Flip-flopping from optical pleasure to visual truth, from positivism to romantic metaphysics, photography seems adrift, pulled by the tides. He felt that attitudes to industrial production provided the mass that caused the swells and flows. The power of his account stems from his refusal to fix photographic meaning at any single point on this semantic horizon, focusing on movement and process, while declining to cast polysemy as liberation. If the claim to neutral observation served all manner of political masters, photographic art, he argued, offered ideological cover for industrial society and alienated work, suggesting that destructive technics could be humanized. He demonstrated how, on the basis of the pendulum's swing, the arch-aesthete Alfred Stieglitz and social reformer Lewis Hine could be made to switch places and he illustrated the absurdity of the art market's fetishization of World War I aerial-reconnaissance pictures, just because Edward Steichen commanded the unit.
